How it works

  1. Add your images

Drag and drop, paste, or pick files. They upload over an encrypted connection.

  2. Pick a quality or a target size

Use the quality slider, or tell it exactly how many KB or MB you need.

  3. Download

Save each file, or grab them all at once as a ZIP.

XCF is the working format of GIMP, the free image editor. It keeps everything about a project: every layer, its mask, its blend mode and opacity, layer groups, paths and guides. That makes it the right format for editing and the wrong one for sharing, because almost nothing except GIMP opens it. Add an XCF here and get a PNG of the picture as GIMP shows it.

The file is rendered by GIMP itself, running on our servers. That matters. Other programs that claim to read XCF usually stack the layers and ignore the rest, so a design that depends on a layer mask or a Multiply layer comes out wrong. Here masks, blend modes, opacity and groups are applied exactly as in the editor, and layers switched off stay hidden.

Where the composition has no background, the PNG is transparent in the same places. Rendering takes two to three seconds, a little longer than an ordinary conversion, since a full image editor is started for it. No account is needed. We checked the output against GIMP's own File, Export on the same project.

What happens to the layers

They are merged into one. A PNG has a single layer, so the layer structure cannot survive in it. The visible result is what is kept: what you would see in GIMP's canvas with the layers as they were when the file was saved. Hidden layers are not included, and neither are paths, guides or selections, which are aids for editing and not part of the picture.

Keep the XCF. It is your editable original, and the PNG is a copy for showing.

Text, fonts and effects

GIMP stores a text layer both as editable text and as the pixels it last drew, and it is those pixels that are used. A text layer therefore looks right even though our servers do not have your fonts. Layer effects that GIMP 3 applies without baking them in are rendered by the same code that would render them on your computer.

Why PNG

PNG is lossless and supports transparency, which suits what people make in GIMP: logos, icons, game sprites, interface parts, cut-out photographs. Every pixel arrives as GIMP computed it. If the project is a photograph with no transparent areas and the file size matters, choose JPG or WebP in the editor's format setting; the conversion is the same up to the last step.

Files from older GIMP versions

The XCF format has grown with the program, and files from GIMP 2.x open in the current version. Very large projects are limited by the pixel count of the canvas, not by the number of layers. Compressed variants with the endings xcf.gz or xcf.bz2 should be unpacked first.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GIMP installed?

No. The file is rendered on our servers, by GIMP, and you download the PNG.

Are layer masks applied?

Yes, along with blend modes, opacity and layer groups, as in GIMP itself.

Is transparency kept?

Yes. Areas that are see-through in the composition are see-through in the PNG.

Can I get the layers as separate files?

No. The result is the merged picture. Exporting single layers is done in GIMP.

Can I convert XCF to JPG as well?

Yes. Change the output format in the editor. Transparent areas are then filled with the background colour you choose.

Is converting XCF free?

Yes, within the file size limit of the free plan.

How long does the conversion take?

Two to three seconds after the upload for most projects, since GIMP is started for each file. Projects with many large layers take a little longer.
